Infant Brain Surgery Requires a Team Approach to Medical Care

Posted on: July 15, 2017

Infant brain surgery requires an incredible level of expertise. With a child so small, brain surgery, which is already complicated, becomes near impossible for anyone but the most experienced surgeons. This is why patients visit our office. We have the skills and expertise to effectively treat infant patients with brain surgery if necessary.

Discussing surgery

We understand that this is a precious life and everything that happens to a child matters. No surgery should be undertaken without an enormous amount of consideration and preparation. For a parent, it is important to take the time to meet with multiple physicians to discuss:

  • What needs to happen
  • Why the surgery needs to happen
  • How the overall process will affect daily routine

We will take the time to have these discussions and go over everything in detail when meeting with parents. On the rare occasion that emergency surgery is necessary, we will still do our best to provide thorough information.

This is a team approach

When performing infant brain surgery, we have a very specific task to complete. As a highly-specialized and skilled pediatric neurosurgeon practice, we perform surgery and will help to monitor a patient’s recovery after the fact. However, this requires a team approach in order to ensure that the child completes the recovery efficiently and without complications. The pediatrician also has an important role to play whenever a child has surgery.

The pediatrician is the one who will be monitoring the patient on a regular basis. Parents will need to call the pediatrician if there are any signs of other health problems. For example, a child suffering from a cold is typically not a major problem. However, if the child contracts a cold while recovering from brain surgery, it is necessary to call the pediatrician immediately. Prior to having the surgery, we will want to ensure that a child has a local pediatrician who could be called in the event of any health problem.

Rehabilitation and recovery

A physical therapist or rehabilitation specialist may also be involved in the recovery process. Brain surgery can impact mobility and speech, as an example. Working with a rehabilitation specialist may be necessary for ensuring that a child has the ability to recover completely.

It may be that the type of surgery, and what was necessary to be completed during it, impacts other bodily functions. Someone who specializes in rehabilitation is a good person to work with to ensure that a child has their best shot at a complete and full recovery that will positively influence the rest of their life.

Your child is in good hands

If your child needs infant brain surgery, there is a reason to be concerned and it is normal for parents to be afraid.  After all, a parent’s natural inclination is to protect their child and keep them safe. Surgery is out of a parent’s control and so it is normal to have fears and concerns. We understand this and want to provide parents with the assurance that their children are in good hands.

There is no way to predict with 100 percent certainty what will happen during surgery. However, it is possible to select a highly trained, qualified and experienced surgeon to complete the procedure. We are; and since we focus on treating children on a daily basis, it is possible for parents to know that a child is truly being helped by someone who is committed to improving the well-being of children.
